The boat tour navigates the calm waters of Periyar Lake, an artificial reservoir nestled within the dense forests of the Western Ghats. This 1.5-hour journey provides opportunities to observe a variety of wildlife in their natural habitat. Herds of elephants descend to the lake to drink, while sambar deer graze peacefully on the shoreline. The park is also home to majestic gaur, wild boars, and a vibrant bird population. Birdwatchers can expect to see egrets and kingfishers perched on branches, and may even catch a glimpse of playful otters in the water. Boating in Periyar Lake is one of the must-do activities when visiting Thekkady.

Two boating options are available, departing from the same location. These options differ in terms of boat capacity and operator.

1. Periyar Tiger Reserve.

Capacity: The boats to approximately seat around 20-25 passengers comfortably.

2. Kerala Tourism

Capacity: This boat is a larger than the other & approximately seats around 40 passengers comfortably.
Boat the boats are large, sturdy vessels with life jackets provided for each passenger.

Important Information:
• It’s recommended to report at the ticket counter at the Periyar Parking area at least 30 minutes before your scheduled boat trip.
• You can then board the Forest Department’s shuttle bus to the Boat Landing area, which is a 15 minutes ride.

Local Tip

Boating is incredibly popular in Thekkady, so secure your tickets well ahead of your visit. Also, carry binoculars for a closer look at the wildlife.

TIMINGS

Both the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) and the Periyar Tiger Reserve operate boat services on the lake.

There are five boat trips daily, with timings as follows:
Morning: 7:30 AM, 9:30 AM & 11:15 AM
Afternoon: 1:45 PM & 3:30 PM

LOCATION

The starting point for the boating adventure in Periyar Lake is at the Boat Landing area, which is about 4 kilometers away from the Parking area. You can board a frequently operated bus operated by the Periyar Tiger Reserve from the parking area. Below is the location of Periyar Tiger Reserve parking.
